Who Is Your Ideal Client?

I don’t think I have an “ideal” client, but I do know that I have never met a person who couldn’t benefit from a lil’ counselling.

Why Did You Become A Counsellor?

Emotional wounds need healing, but often the wounds can feel like too much to handle on our own.  Witnessing the negative affect of untreated emotional wounds caused me a great deal of sadness.  I decided to transform my sadness into purpose.  Human suffering compelled me to become a counsellor.  I can’t take the suffering away, but I can help people learn to “suffer well”, to acknowledge their painful feelings & pasts and live great lives in spite of it all.

Why Did You Join TLCC?

Accessing counselling can already have so many barriers and not feeling like you are able to afford to support your Mental Wellness should NOT be one of them.

Considerate, Dedicated, and Always Up For A Good Laugh.

Who Is Your Ideal Client?

Someone who senses that something doesn’t feel “right” or seems “off balance”. For example, you might ruminate over the same thoughts, be “snappy” or irritable, or simply feel “numb” or “not like yourself”. Often, this awareness is the first step in making the changes we need to make in order to grow. Because change can sometimes be uncomfortable, part of my role is to ensure you feel emotionally safe to do the work involved.

Why Did You Become A Counsellor?

From a young age I have been drawn to people, to their stories. I wanted to know more about them and how their past experiences, present beliefs and future expectations shaped their lives. My passion for psychology, and desire to learn and understand more about my own journey, has led me to this career that I love.

How Long Have You Been Practicing?

1 year as a Registered Clinical Counsellor. From 2007, I was self-employed in London, England as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, but I took a break to have a family, move back to Kelowna, and further my education with my Masters in Counselling.

Why Did You Join TLCC?

I believe in affordable mental health access to all, and the importance of collaborative, compassionate, care in supporting our community. Together we can make a bigger difference than alone.

Rachael Spyker

What Are Your Top Three Areas Of Focus?

Everything I do is filtered through a trauma informed lens. On top of that, embodied mindfulness techniques are a main focus of mine. Lastly, I am fascinated in somatic modalities of psychotherapy, particularly in relation to the Polyvagal theory.

What Are Your Top Three Strengths?

My dedicated passion to the psychology field. I am personable and can empathize with all backgrounds and experiences. I am a fierce advocate for the vulnerable and social justice issues.

What Are Your Top Three Weaknesses?

I have minimal tolerance for discriminatory/oppressive belief systems. My passion come across as being quite intense at times. I prefer comfort over fashion; leggings over jeans. However, these would never manifest in a counselling setting.

What Are Three Words Someone Would Use To Describe You?

Passionate, Driven, and Empathic.

Who Is Your Ideal Client?

Anyone who has a compassionate curiosity towards understanding their behaviours and belief systems in a deeper way. One motivated towards growth and personal expansion.

Why Did You Become A Counsellor?

I have an intense passion around understanding the unconscious processes which dictate our behaviours. Particularly, how those patterned beliefs and behaviours, which are formed predominantly in our early childhood environments, guide and control us into adulthood. Diving into and exploring the depths of the unconscious psyche is the most fascinating endeavour I could imagine. It is empowering to understand that while we are affected by, we are not fated to our history.

How Long Have You Been Practicing?

I have worked in mental health field for 5 years.

Why Did You Join TLCC?

I am interning with Williams and Associates and this is an opportunity they offered me. One which I am very grateful for.

Who Is Your Ideal Client?

My ideal client is anyone who is willing to show up, be open to exploring their internal landscape, and accessing their vulnerabilities in our sessions together. Counselling is not a race – it takes time and commitment. All I ask is that my clients are prepared to embark on their therapeutic process with me in a collaborative and safe relationship.

Why Did You Become A Counsellor?

My passion for helping people and my early interest in topics such as addiction, trauma, and mental health has guided me towards a career in counselling. I understand that we never know the challenges people around us are facing, everyone has a story to tell, and everyone deserves the opportunity to explore and process their story. I feel incredibly privileged and fulfilled to offer that space for people and to be alongside their paths to healing.

How Long Have You Been Practicing?

I started my internship placement in September 2020 after completing my coursework for my MEd. in Counselling degree. I have been volunteering and working in the mental health field for approximately 6 years.

Why Did You Join TLCC?

The Local Counselling Card brings all of this together and provides counsellors and possible clients the ability to connect. I’m also so pleased to be part of this platform as well as The #1millioncampaign movement.
