What Are Three Words Someone Would Use To Describe You?

Considerate, Dedicated, and Always Up For A Good Laugh.

Who Is Your Ideal Client?

Someone who senses that something doesn’t feel “right” or seems “off balance”. For example, you might ruminate over the same thoughts, be “snappy” or irritable, or simply feel “numb” or “not like yourself”. Often, this awareness is the first step in making the changes we need to make in order to grow. Because change can sometimes be uncomfortable, part of my role is to ensure you feel emotionally safe to do the work involved.

Why Did You Become A Counsellor?

From a young age I have been drawn to people, to their stories. I wanted to know more about them and how their past experiences, present beliefs and future expectations shaped their lives. My passion for psychology, and desire to learn and understand more about my own journey, has led me to this career that I love.

How Long Have You Been Practicing?

1 year as a Registered Clinical Counsellor. From 2007, I was self-employed in London, England as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, but I took a break to have a family, move back to Kelowna, and further my education with my Masters in Counselling.

Why Did You Join TLCC?

I believe in affordable mental health access to all, and the importance of collaborative, compassionate, care in supporting our community. Together we can make a bigger difference than alone.

Community Partners

Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society

How does your organization support the mental health and wellness of our community?

Our agency offers Trauma Therapy for sexual assault survivors, both for recent and historical sexual abuse. We offer separate programs for youth and adults: Our SAIP Program (Sexual Abuse Intervention Program) and our ACP Program (Adult Counselling Program).

Our agency offers several specialized services for survivors of both domestic and sexual violence that include emotional support, court support, safety planning and more. We also offer Youth Prevention Programs in Okanagan middle schools, wherein we focus upon mental health wellness for youth.

Tell us more about your agency?

Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society is a community partner of the Child Advocacy Centre of Kelowna – Our Counsellor provides counselling for children at the CAC. We have referrals for sexual assault counselling that come to us from local highschools, RCMP, Kelowna General Hospital, Foundry, Connect Counselling and CMHA Youth Programs.

We also refer our clients to Connect Counselling and alternate options for counselling should we not be able to provide them the necessary counselling services in a time sensitive manner.

Why have you joined The Local Counselling Card Initiative?

Through our Adult counselling Program for sexual assault survivors, we see firsthand how critical it is for survivors to access counselling on their path to healing and mental wellness. It’s essential for counselling to be both accessible and affordable.

While waitlists continue to be a barrier to accessing counselling, we believe that TLCC is an incredible initiative that will help alleviate the barrier of cost for those seeking services in our community.

Connect Counselling & Therapy Society

How does your organization support the mental health and wellness of our community?

We have been providing free mental health services in the community for 35 years. We
address issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, loss, trauma, intimate partner violence, parenting and more. Our services are available to men, women, children, seniors, families and those that identify in as non-binary.

We work with Kelowna Women’s Shelter, E – Fry, IHA, Child & Youth Mental Health, The Foundry, and CMHA Kelowna to provide services within the community.

Tell us more about your agency?

The focus of the Centre has always been one of providing counselling and education – making a difference in the lives of individuals, families, and the community. The agency has undergone many changes over the years, including a move from the original Park Road location in Rutland to the present downtown Leon Avenue location. The number of programs grew from the original child and youth counselling contract to include adult services, men’s groups and services for women in abusive relationships.

Today the Centre has a broad funding base, including several government ministries and community grants. The area that is served by the Centre extends from Peachland to Oyama with a total population of approximately 175,000. The agency is respected for its accountability to the community, responsiveness to community needs, and collaboration with other community services. It is a welcoming, safe and confidential environment.

Why have you joined The Local Counselling Card Initiative?

We believe in supporting options that provide more mental health access to clients who don’t have extended health care benefits and do not want to wait on long lists for services that are free.
